what is this

ok so i want to have pretty cables in vcv rack, and there's a way to change them all at once by editing a file. not the most gentle method but hey.

using a preset

on the presets page, hit the copy theme button on whichever row you fancy. you get a snippet that looks like this:

"cableColors": [
    "#84FBB2",
    "#00E9CD",
    "#00D0E8",
    "#00AFF9",
    "#2F88FB",
    "#6A5EE7"
],

this is the format in which vcv rack stores the colors internally, at the moment. now we need to sneak it into that storage.

where the theme file lives

so, we're gonna open vcv racks config file and replace a few lines. beware... it's good to be careful here, there are rules and shit for this kinda file, and maybe you'll break your rack installation, who can say?

though in our case, we just need to replace one thing with another. it should be fine :3 now go to:

Also, huge pit not to fall into: if you have vcv rack open, it owerwrites the file completely as soon as you close it, of course.

operation

okay. once you're in there, you're gonna see a lot of shit. scroll down a bit, or search, and eventually you'll find a line starting with "cableColors": [. read ahead until a line soon after it, mostly empty, with just ], on it. there are many such lines, we are looking for the first one next after cableColors.

select all of those, and replace them with some color scheme that you copied. hopefully it should look roughly like before. save, and done! now start vcv rack, and check your cable colors. if they're different, good job!!! ✨🐕 ...if everything is borked, good job 🙄
